Staff instructors

A PGA member, John Kennaday comes to coaching from the student’s approach. He has been a student of the game since he was a child growing up on the Monterey Peninsula. Studying the game lead to numerous junior golf titles throughout the state, culminating in a scholarship to San Jose State University. In college John was voted to the All-Conference team each year, and was an All-American in his senior year.

Throughout his career, John has actively set out in search of great coaching, to learn as much as possible. This strategy allowed him to work with some of the best in the country. John has benefited from the experience of Fred Shoemaker, Ted Goin, Rick Rhoads, Ken Likeness, Vince Bradley, Bill Condaxis, Dana Jetter and Rick Jetter (and the most influential of all – his father, Jim Kennaday).

In 1988 John turned professional, starting a playing career that spanned seven and a half years. He played on virtually every tour in North America – from Canada to Mexico and all points in between. The most notable of the tours John played were the Canadian PGA and the Hogan/Nike Tour.

John’s study of the game gave him the opportunity to work with Mark Dorcak, promoting a completely new direction to John’s focus. With the help of Mark, Fred Shoemaker and Bill Condaxis, John has taken up teaching from the coach’s perspective, a technique that has been well-received by students and friends. His ability to take on the role of a golf coach brings a new level of intimacy to each lesson. John understands his students’ goals, struggles and potential for excellence much more clearly than most golf instructors because he wants his students to love the game as much as he does. He works in partnership with his students to bring out the best in their golf games. This approach has helped John make friends of his students.

John is also starting to pick up his playing career again on a local level. He believes that, to be a great coach, you must be actively involved in the journey yourself. Look for him on the local leader boards and don’t hesitate to say “Hello.”
